Installation Methods

The author provides two installation methods: XNB version and CP version.

XNB Version (Recommended, Easy to Use)

Directly replace the original game files with the downloaded mod files. The advantage is that no other mods are needed as assistance; just download the portrait mod and you're good to go. However, note that since the author has drawn multiple optional versions for some characters' portraits (such as Abigail), if you later want to switch to a different portrait version, you will need to manually replace the corresponding XNB file again, which can be a bit tedious. Also, make sure to back up the original files before replacing.

CP Version

Requires installing SMAPI (24.0.0) and Generic Mod Config Menu first. The advantage is that it does not modify the game's original XNB files, and you can easily manage mods and switch portrait options via the settings in the bottom-left corner of the game's login screen. Installation steps:

  1. Install SMAPI (go to the official SMAPI website to download and install);
  2. Download the CP version mod file and extract it;
  3. Place the "[CP]PortraitAnimeModsOhoDavi" folder into the "Mods" folder inside the game directory (typical path: steamapps\common\StardewValley\Mods);
  4. Launch the game via StardewModdingAPI.

This portrait mod provides more than one initial portrait version for certain characters (for example, Abigail has two different optional styles). With the CP version, using a management mod makes switching between different versions much easier.

Fixing the Winter Glitch

This issue is essentially because the author did not draw dedicated winter portraits for all characters, causing the game to fall back to the original files during winter, making the mod portraits disappear. Here's how to fix it:

XNB Version

Search for the "Portraits" folder in the game's local files; it contains NPC portrait files. Each NPC has portraits for different settings; take Abigail as an example, you'll see files named "Abigail", "Abigail_Beach", "Abigail_Winter", etc. Since the mod lacks the "_Winter" suffixed files added in version 1.6, we can copy the mod's non-suffixed "Abigail" file, rename it to "Abigail_Winter", and then replace the game's original file with the modified mod file (remember to back up the original first). This way, the modded portrait will also display in winter.

CP Version

After extracting the mod file, open the "assets" folder inside. The method is similar to the XNB version: find the initial portrait version you like (since some characters have multiple options), make a copy of it, add the "_Winter" suffix (e.g., "Abigail_Winter"), and save. Note that some NPCs don't have a special winter portrait anyway, so those characters don't need modification.

Update: The author has also released a 1.6.1 update file (version 1.6.1a), which adds winter outfits for Abigail and Alex, available as an XNB version. This update was published on April 6, 2024, is 153KB in size, has 57.3k unique downloads and 77.5k total downloads. The update also includes new expressions for Haley. If you are using the XNB method, you can directly download this update pack to fix the winter glitch for Abigail and Alex.
