Installation Methods

The author provides two installation methods: XNB version and CP version.

XNB Version (Recommended, easiest to use)

Directly replace the game's original files with the downloaded mod files. The advantage is that no other mods are needed; you only need to download the portrait mod to use it. However, note that since the author has created multiple optional versions of the initial portraits for some characters (such as Abigail), if you later want to switch portrait versions, you will need to manually replace the corresponding XNB files again, which can be tedious. Also, be sure to back up the original files before replacing them.

CP Version

Requires first installing SMAPI (24.0.0) and Generic Mod Config Menu (or similar mod manager). The advantage is that you don't need to modify the game's original XNB files, and you can easily manage mods and switch portrait options through the settings in the lower-left corner of the game's title screen. Installation steps:

  1. Install SMAPI (go to the SMAPI official website, download and install);
  2. Download the CP version of the mod file and extract it;
  3. Place the "[CP]PortraitAnimeModsOhoDavi" folder into the "Mods" folder in the game's root directory (typical path: steamapps\common\StardewValley\Mods);
  4. Launch the game through StardewModdingAPI.

This portrait mod offers more than one initial portrait version for some characters (for example, Abigail has two different style options), and in the CP version you can more easily switch between versions using the mod manager.

Fixing the Winter Failure Issue

This issue is essentially because the author did not draw dedicated winter portraits for all characters, so in winter the game uses the vanilla files, causing the portrait mod to fail. Here's how to fix it:

XNB Version

Search for the "Portraits" folder in your local game files; it contains the NPC portrait files. Each NPC has portraits for different scenes. Using Abigail as an example, you will see files named "Abigail", "Abigail_Beach", "Abigail_Winter", etc. Since the mod does not include the "_Winter" suffix files that were added in version 1.6, you can copy the mod's suffix-less "Abigail" file, rename it to "Abigail_Winter", and then replace the game's original file with this modified mod file (remember to back up the original first). This will make the modded portrait display in winter as well.

CP Version

After extracting the mod file, open the "assets" folder inside. The method is similar to the XNB version: find your preferred initial portrait version (since some characters have multiple options), make a copy, add the "_Winter" suffix (e.g., "Abigail_Winter"), and save. Note that some NPCs don't have a special winter portrait at all; those characters don't need modification.

Additional update: The author also released a 1.6.1 update file (version 1.6.1a), which adds winter outfits for Abigail and Alex, available as an XNB version. This update was published on April 6, 2024, with a file size of 153KB, 57.3k unique downloads, and 77.5k total downloads. The update also includes new expressions for Haley. If you're using the XNB method, you can directly download this update pack to fix the winter issue for Abigail and Alex.
