Minecraft Nether Fortress Guide

How to Find One

  1. Preparation: Build a Nether Portal, bring plenty of building blocks, and step through into The Nether.
  2. Scout the Area: Fortresses usually generate in the lava seas. Walk or look around above the lava sea—it's much easier to spot them from up there.
  3. Coordinate Tip: Fortress structures often pass through areas near Z=0. Once in The Nether, try to keep your Z-coordinate around 0 and head straight; you've got a solid chance of finding one.

If you have cheats enabled, you can just use the locate command: /locate fortress

How They Generate and Key Features

Nether Fortresses can spawn in any Nether biome. The game splits The Nether into specific regions, and each region generates either a Nether Fortress or a Bastion Remnant — not both.

  • Region Size: In Java Edition, each region is 432x432 blocks; in Bedrock Edition, it's 480x480.
  • Generation Boundaries: The southern and eastern edges of each region have a 4-chunk-wide buffer zone where nothing spawns. This means the actual generation area is 368x368 in Java and 416x416 in Bedrock.
  • Spawn Chance: The two structures never share the same region, but they can overlap at region edges. In Java Edition, the chance of a Nether Fortress spawning is 40% (2/5); in Bedrock Edition it's 33.3% (1/3).
  • Weird Cases: Sometimes a fortress gets completely buried in netherrack, making it hard to get into. When this happens, exterior walkways and bridges are covered, but the indoor rooms are usually still open. On very rare occasions, you might find glowstone, huge crimson fungi, or huge warped fungi growing inside.
