Minecraft: How to Make All Portals in Minecraft?

Wo De Shi Jie Da Wan Jia·5/21/2026

Nether Portal

This was added in the Halloween Update on October 31, 2010. The portal frame is made of obsidian, with a size between 4x5 and 23x23. For aesthetic purposes, the corners should have obsidian, but it’s not required.

Once the frame is built, the player needs to set the inside of the frame on fire using flint and steel, fire charges, lava, or flammable blocks. This creates a portal block area between 2x3 and 21x21, which is a swirling block. When you build a Nether portal in the End, it will not function at all. Note: If you build it incorrectly, such as the wrong size, nothing will happen even if you light it.

Build Steps

  1. Gather materials: 14 obsidian, flint and steel.
  2. Building method: Use obsidian to create a doorframe; the corners can use obsidian but can also be left out to save materials. Then light the inside of the door with flint and steel to activate it. That's how to build a Nether portal, allowing you to travel to the Nether.

Material Gathering

  • Obsidian: First craft a lava bucket, collect lava and pour it on water to obtain obsidian.
  • Flint and Steel: Craft in a crafting grid using gold and flint.

End Portal

Cannot be built in survival mode without mods (meaning you can only find existing ones). The End portal is a naturally generated structure that the player can use to reach the End.

The End portal appears only in strongholds, consisting of 12 End portal frames arranged in a horizontal, 5-block-wide square with missing corners. To activate the portal, every frame must have an Ender Eye placed in it.

The End portal is located in the portal room of a stronghold, hanging over a lava pool with a staircase leading up to the portal rim. Embedded in the staircase is a silverfish spawner. A few End portal frames are already activated with Ender Eyes (usually 1-2), but most are not.

After placing Ender Eyes in all remaining inactive frames, the portal activates, generating 9 End portal blocks in the center. Once the player touches an End portal block, they are instantly transported to the End.

In cases where the portal room is intersected by other structures, such as abandoned mineshafts, the End portal structure may be destroyed, rendering this portal permanently unactivatable.

Aether Portal

How to get to the Aether in Minecraft, done in 2 steps:

  1. Download the Minecraft Aether mod and make sure your game version supports the mod.
  2. Use the recipe to build the Aether portal. Note that the Aether portal is not crafted via a crafting table; you simply build it on the ground in the same pattern as a Nether portal.

Once placed correctly and activated in the right way, the inside of the portal will turn into a portal shape; after a short wait you'll enter the Aether.

How to get Glowstone

Materials: Glowstone dust. Recipe: Combine 9 glowstone dust in a crafting table to make 1 glowstone.

Vanilla Minecraft only has the Nether, also called the Nether, but there's a mod, the Aether mod, which adds an Aether portal. Use glowstone instead of obsidian to build a portal frame just like a Nether portal, then craft a special flint and steel-like item using gold ingots and flint, and light the glowstone frame just like lighting a Nether portal. However, note that the Aether is only accessible in certain versions of Minecraft, and you must have the Aether mod installed.

Twilight Forest Portal

The Twilight Forest is a new dimension, similar to the Nether or the End. However, the Twilight Forest map is huge, infinite like the Overworld, with coordinates corresponding to the Overworld.

Making the portal requires water, obtained with a water bucket, and some flowers. First, dig a square hole in the grass, just one block deep.

The Twilight Forest portal is built differently from the ones before. For example, as shown in the image, dig a 2x2x1 hole in the ground, pour water from a bucket into the hole, then plant the flowers you collected around the water hole.

At this point, a basic Twilight portal is almost complete. To actually use it, you need to activate it.

Activation Method

Throw a diamond into the water, wait for thunder to strike, and the Twilight Forest portal will be ready. Use the completed portal to travel to the Twilight Forest.

Obtaining diamonds: Of course, you have to find diamonds yourself. You can fight bosses or search for resources in the Twilight Forest to have fun.

Moon Portal

Method 1

In the Advent of Ascension (Nevermine 2) mod, to find the Moon portal, you need a monster called Terrestrial. Once you find and kill this monster, a Moon portal will spawn. So how to find Terrestrial? Simple: go to a plains biome on a full moon night where lots of mobs spawn and search around. Of course, this requires a bit of luck.

The Moon dimension contains many structures and moon monsters. The most useful resources are the moon village, moon prison, and moon labyrinth. The moon labyrinth’s lunar altar can convert sulfur copper antimony ingots into moon ingots. The monsters spawned from the moon prison’s spawner drop uncharged moonstones, which can be combined with moon ingots to craft the lunar armor set, or exchanged for orb items. Orbs can be used on a moon creation platform to obtain a staff. Additionally, some NPCs in the moon village can trade many items; most importantly, you can exchange copper coins for silver coins, and silver coins for gold coins.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that the Moon has a boss. You can summon it by using an Observer’s Eye on an observatory altar. However, fighting the moon boss is not recommended because, although it can drop equipment like Moon Bow, Moon Assault Rifle, Moon Bow, Moon Sword, etc., these weapons deal random damage, so the cost-performance ratio isn’t great.

Method 2

Required materials: Moon mod, gold blocks, spacesuit. The Moon portal needs 14 gold blocks arranged in the following pattern to create the Moon portal.

Gold Block Gold Block Gold Block Gold Block
Gold Block Portal Gold Block
Gold Block Portal Gold Block
