5 Types of Capes in Minecraft

Capes are decorative items in Minecraft used to commemorate certain events. Like player skins, they can be changed once obtained. When equipped with elytra, capes can alter the elytra's appearance to match the cape. Due to their uniqueness, many Minecraft players adore capes and strive to acquire them in-game.

Minecraft has officially released over 60 capes, along with countless others created by modders and players. Among them, some are particularly famous and meaningful:

1. Mojang Capes

This series includes three different capes, primarily designed for Mojang employees, each owned by only a few staff members. Two of them have been discontinued, but Mojang employees still cherish the designs.

2. MINECON Capes

MINECON was the predecessor to Minecraft Live, the game's global annual event. In the past, players who purchased tickets and attended the offline event would receive an official MINECON cape, with a unique design each year. From 2011 to 2016, six different "annual" capes were released. After 2017, the event moved online, making MINECON capes an unattainable dream for many players.

3. Festival Capes

Minecraft Festival was originally planned as an in-person event in Orlando, Florida, in late 2022. Official special capes would be given to attendees, marking the return of a "get a cape by attending" event after MINECON capes.

4. Personal Capes

These capes are awarded only to specific players who achieve notable milestones in the game. Currently, there are only eight such capes. They are given to players who reach certain milestones in game development or the community, such as the 1 millionth Minecraft player, Drullkus (who redesigned prismarine textures), and the birthday cape for the MC website team leader.

5. Other Capes

This category includes capes awarded to winners of Mojang-organized competitions, such as map-making, level design, bug reporting, and tournaments. Examples include the famous Turtle cape and the Crowdin Chinese translator cape. The Migrator cape also falls under this category and is the only relatively easy-to-obtain cape for Chinese players.

These capes are common in the Java Edition. The Bedrock Edition also has many unique and meaningful capes, but Java's longer history makes its capes more valuable. With the synchronization of Bedrock and Java features and bundled sales of both versions, players may have the chance to obtain capes usable across both versions in the future.
